  1. Name of Department: Foreign literature

When it was established in 24/9/1997 name of Derpartment was Literature theory and Foreign literature. From 11/01/2013 the name was changed into Foreign literature (according to Decision No 43/QĐ-ĐHHĐ “About changing the name of Derpartment of Literature theory and Foreign literature” of President of Hong Duc Unversity).

  1. History of formation/ Development process

Precursor of the Department was Literature II Group (Literature theory and Foreign literature) belonged to Faculty of Society, Thanh Hoa Teachers College. Literature II Group (along with Literature I Group and Literature III Group) was separated in 9/1996 from a general Literature group. When Hong Duc University was established, Faculty of Society was changed into Faculty of Social Sciences.

When it was established (24/9/1997), The Department had 7 lecturers, in which 3 lecturers was BA and 4 lectures was MSc. Until fresent, the Department has 7 lecturers more (3 lecturers are BA, 3 lectures are MSc and 1 lecturer is PhD) with 4 lecturers successfully defended their PhD thesises. The Department has had 3 retired lecturers, 5 lecturers moving to another departments and 2 lecturers moving to other offices. With many changes, the Department now has 4 lecturers, 3 of them are PhD and 1 lecturer is MSc. (See more in tables of part 3).

Belong to study and teaching in Literature theory and Foreign literature speciality, lecturers of the Department also undertake subjects of general and interdisciplinary knowledge such as: General aesthetics, General logic, General press, Human behaviour and Social environment, Vietnamese Faith and Religion, Vietnamese cultural basis, Drafting techniques, Thanh Hoa local knowledge…..

Teaching staff of the department were very active in teaching continuation classes (when Continuing education Center of Thanh Hoa province belonged to Hong Duc University), pre-university classes and Vietnames classes for Lao People's Democratic Republic.

Before and after the name has been changed, department’s tasks were narrowed considerably due to moving literature theory group to another department. At present, the department carries out some main duties as follow:

- Studing and teaching subjects in foreign literature speciality (Chinese literature, Indian literature, Japanese literature, the Asia South-east literature, Russian literature, the Eastern ancient literature to 17th Century, the Eastern literature of 18th – 19th Century, the Eastern literature of 20th Century, prosody of Duong poem, prosody of Chinese classical novel, the Eastern novel in the 20 Century – characteristic and movement trend, ect).

- Teaching general and interdisciplinary subjects such as: Beliefs and Religion in Vietnam, Vietnamese cultural basis, Drafting techniques, ect.

- Studying and teaching subjects for graduate students in Vietnamese literature speciality (Some issues of research methods of the Eastern ancient literature), literature teaching theory and teaching methods of literature - Vietnamese (Studying and teaching foreign literature in high schools).

Some outstanding achievements:

- Persistently strive to overcome difficulties of the Department; Actively build a self-study, self-improvement staff.

- Managing and implementing seriously all modules are assigned by the Faculty and the University with high quality and effectiveness.

- About the scientific research, lecturers of the Department have completed one project at the provincial level (Dr. Trinh Dinh Ha: 2008), many studies at the University level (Dr. Trinh Dinh Ha: 2003, 2013; BA. Nguyen Manh Hung: 2004, 2013; MSc. Le Nhu Binh: 2006, 2013, Dr. Vu Thanh Ha: 2013). Department staff regularly post their writings on scientific journals and scientific journal of Hong Duc University, actively submit presentations and participate in scientific seminars at all levels. Many lecturers of the Department are rewarded for their achievements in scientific research (Dr. Trinh Dinh Ha: 2004, 2009, Le Nhu Binh: 2004, 2012, Dr. Nguyen Thi Hanh: 2017, Dr. Nguyen Thi Tuyet: 2007).
