The conference: “Integrating Climate Change Curriculum into University Curricula”

With the assistance of United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Hong Duc University worked with the Department of Foreign Affairs of Thanh Hoa, the Project “Vietnam Forest and Delta” (VFD); the Program “Lowering Emissions in Asia's Forests” (LEAF) to organize the conference “Integrating Climate Change Curriculum into University Curricula” for two days 27-28 November, 2014.

 Vietnam Forests and Deltas is a 5 year program (2012-2017) funded by USAID with the purpose of enhancing climate change resilience planning and action from community to national level. The program will put into practice the national policies and strategies in response to climate change and development under low emissions with a focus on reducing emissions from forestry and agriculture sectors and strengthening climate-smart livelihoods and settlements, particularly in rural areas. Addressing long-term climate change risks and gender vulnerabilities in both forest and delta landscapes are key program objectives. 

The conference Integrating Climate Change Curriculum into University Curricula” was successfully organized at the Universities of Vietnam Forestry, Vinh and Dalat.

This year, the conference, which took place at Hong Duc University, with the participation of the representative of Winrock International Organization in Vietnam; Mrs. Nguyen Thu Ha-an expert in gender and competence construction; Mr. Ha Minh Tam-Vice president of Board of Project Management “Vietnam Forests and Deltas” in Thanh Hoa; Mr. Roel Bosma-representative of the Project “Supporting the Integration in Agricultural Curricula of Climate Change  of Concerns at Universities of Agriculture.” ; Mr. Le Minh Thong-Vice director of the Department of Science and Technology, Thanh Hoa; Mr. Hoang Nam-Vice Rector of Hong Duc University; Mrs. Hoang Thi Mai- Vice Rector of Hong Duc University; and staff, lecturers, students of the Universities of Hong Duc, Vietnam Forestry, Da lat, Vinh, and Forestry of Hue.

After two efficient working days, participants, scientists, lecturers and students exchanged their opinions and scientific perspectives on the climate change resilience related issues to reach unanimous solutions to climate change. Along with the introduction of research results and reports on specialized sectors of climate change, the conference concentrated on the exchange of training documents on climate change as well as measures for the development of the training program that LEAF and its Experts has implemented for the past two years, including 4 main modules:

·      “Overview of Basic Climate Change”

·      “Overview of Social & Environmental Soundness (SES)”

·      “Overview of LowEmissionsLand Use Planning (LELUP)”

·      “Overview of Carbon Measurement & Monitoring  (CMM)”

 

Conference also discussed to build the plan of intensive training on climate change in Vietnam in years to come.

The conference ended with success at 11h30 on 28 November 2014
